How to operate manual butterfly valve properly?

Proper operation of manual butterfly valves not only ensures reliable fluid shutoff and flow regulation but also protects the sealing liner, valve shaft and transmission components from premature wear, jamming or leakage.Improper force, fast rotation or incomplete switching are common operational errors that shorten valve service life and trigger pipeline safety hazards(Baker,2021).Manual butterfly valves mainly include handwheel type and lever handle type, and standardized operation steps apply to both versions.
1.Pre-operation Inspection
Before turning the handle or handwheel, visually check the valve body for external leakage at the shaft packing and flange clamping surface.Confirm no abnormal vibration, rust or foreign debris stuck in the disc gap.Check the position indicator scale clearly marked on the top transmission box to distinguish fully open,half-open and fully closed positions.
For valves that have remained stationary for a long time, slightly rotate the handle back and forth within a small angle range to release static adhesion between the disc and sealing seat.Do not apply violent torque directly if slight sticking is felt.
2.Standard Switch Operation Steps
Full Closing Operation
Rotate the manual handwheel clockwise(or push the lever handle to the closed side)slowly and evenly with steady force.Stop turning immediately once the position pointer aligns with the“CLOSE”mark.Do not over-tighten the handle with extra tools such as wrenches or extension pipes.Excessive torque will squeeze and deform soft rubber seals, causing permanent liner extrusion damage and increasing internal leakage after repeated use.
Full Opening Operation
Rotate the handwheel counterclockwise(or pull the lever to the open position)at a uniform low speed until the indicator points to the“OPEN”scale.Do not jerk the handle hard for rapid opening.Sudden fast rotation generates water hammer impact inside the pipeline, which impacts the valve disc and weakens sealing performance over time. After full opening,do not reverse the handle backward to lock;the built-in limit block will fix the disc position automatically.
Flow Throttling Regulation
When adjusting medium flow rate, turn the handle to the middle scale between fully open and fully closed.Avoid long-term throttling under nearly closed state. In half-closed small opening status,high-speed fluid scours the local sealing surface severely, leading to rapid abrasion of EPDM or PTFE liner and early failure of tight shutoff function. If flow regulation is required frequently,an eccentric butterfly valve with wear-resistant sealing is recommended.
3.Key Operational Specifications
Operate with bare hands or standard matched handles only.Never use steel pipes, pliers or crowbars to increase torque;oversized force may bend the valve stem, crack the worm gear box or tear the seal.
Keep uniform slow rotation speed during opening and closing;violent impact operation is prohibited for all working media including water, gas and sewage.
If the valve is stuck and cannot rotate smoothly, stop operation immediately.Do not force twist the handle.Check whether solid particles are clamped between disc and seat,or whether shaft packing is over-compressed.Clean foreign matters or loosen packing bolts slightly before re-operation.
For vertical installed manual butterfly valves with the actuator downward, prevent rainwater, sewage or dust from infiltrating the transmission box;regular lubrication of worm gear is required to maintain flexible operation.
After long-time full closing for pipeline maintenance, slightly open the valve for pressure balance before fully opening, which reduces fluid impact on the sealing pair.
4.Post-operation Maintenance Check
After each operation, record the switch state according to on-site pipeline management rules.Wipe dust, sludge and corrosive liquid off the manual transmission part.Apply anti-rust grease to the exposed valve stem regularly for outdoor or sewage treatment pipelines.Periodically test the full open and full closed stroke to verify whether the limit position deviates;adjust the stop block if the disc cannot reach complete sealing.
Common Misoperations and Consequences
Using extended tools to strengthen closing torque:crushed rubber liner, persistent internal leakage.
Rapid snap opening/closing:water hammer,disc deformation,seal scratch.
Long-term operation under small throttling opening:local seal erosion, shortened service life.
Forcible rotation when the valve is stuck:bent valve shaft, broken worm gear assembly.
