T Type Strainer
T type strainer, also known as tee strainer, is a professional inline filtration component with a distinctive T-shaped body layout, specially developed for large-flow industrial pipelines and systems requiring easy horizontal or vertical maintenance. Different from Y type strainers with small dirt storage volume, its tee-style cavity creates a spacious internal storage zone for solid impurities, making it a preferred filtration device for main trunk pipelines, steam loops and heavy-duty fluid transmission lines.
The overall structure forms a clear T shape: the horizontal straight segment serves as the main passage for medium flow, while the vertical downward branch holds a cylindrical filter cartridge or mesh basket. When liquid, steam or gas flows through the horizontal channel, all particulate contaminants such as welding residues, rust scale, sand grains and sediment are captured inside the vertical filter element. Clean medium continues to flow downstream without obvious turbulence, maintaining stable flow velocity and low pressure drop across the whole unit. A bolted blind cover is fitted at the bottom of the vertical branch, sealed with elastic gaskets to prevent leakage during normal operation. Operators only need to detach this bottom cover to extract the filter screen for washing, debris removal or replacement, without disassembling the entire strainer from the pipeline.
T type strainers are built to withstand medium to high working pressure. Main body materials include cast ductile iron, carbon steel and stainless steel 304/316 to cope with cold water, hot water, high-temperature steam, fuel oil and weakly corrosive chemical fluids. Internal filter screens are woven stainless steel with customizable mesh counts, balancing filtration accuracy and flow capacity. Standard pressure grades cover PN16, PN25 and Class 150, with complete flange connection ends matching large-diameter industrial pipes ranging from DN80 to DN400. Threaded small-size versions are also available for auxiliary branch pipelines with lower flow demand.
Installation flexibility stands out as a key merit. It can be mounted horizontally with the vertical filter leg pointing straight down, or installed vertically on risers as long as the T branch faces downward to collect impurities by gravity. Gravity deposition avoids re-suspension of trapped particles, keeping filtration efficiency consistent over long operating hours. Thanks to its enlarged filter cavity, T type strainers hold far more dirt than standard Y strainers, significantly lengthening the interval between cleaning cycles and reducing system downtime for maintenance.
In comparison with basket strainers that require top disassembly, T type strainers allow ground-level cleaning without overhead operation, which greatly improves construction safety during routine inspection. Its straight-through flow path delivers smaller flow resistance, cutting extra energy consumption for pumps and blowers. The thickened valve body wall enhances shock resistance against sudden flow surges, suitable for continuous non-stop industrial production lines.
Common application scenarios cover power station steam pipelines, petrochemical fluid delivery trunk lines, central air conditioning large circulating water systems, municipal water supply main pipes, boiler feedwater systems, fire protection large-diameter mains and industrial wastewater pre-filtration equipment. By intercepting hard particles ahead of pumps, control valves, flow meters and heat exchangers, T type strainers effectively eliminate abrasion, blockage and equipment breakdown risks, securing stable long-term operation of the whole fluid system.
