How to choose the right butterfly valve?

Selecting a suitable butterfly valve requires comprehensive evaluation of pipeline working conditions, medium characteristics, sealing structure, connection form and actuation mode, which directly determines pipeline safety, service life and operating cost.
First, confirm core working parameters: nominal diameter, nominal pressure, operating temperature and medium composition. Concentric soft-seal butterfly valves fit low-pressure clean water, HVAC and general sewage pipelines, featuring low cost and lightweight structure. Double eccentric butterfly valves are designed for medium-pressure oil, gas and mild corrosive liquid, achieving better tightness and longer seal lifespan. Triple offset metal hard-seal butterfly valves are the optimal choice for high temperature, high pressure, strong corrosion and zero-leakage working conditions such as petrochemical, thermal power and offshore seawater systems (Sotoodeh, 2023).
Second, distinguish connection types: wafer butterfly valves are clamped between two flanges for compact installation and low cost; lug-type butterfly valves allow blind flange mounting on one side, convenient for pipeline maintenance and single-end disassembly. For large-diameter heavy-duty pipelines, flanged butterfly valves provide stronger structural stability and pressure resistance.
Third, match sealing materials with conveyed media. EPDM rubber suits water, air and weak acid-base environments; PTFE lining resists strong corrosive chemical fluids; metal-to-metal hard sealing withstands high temperature above 400℃ and abrasive media containing solid particles. Improper seal material selection will lead to rapid aging, internal leakage and frequent replacement.
Fourth, select actuators based on operation frequency and automatic control demands. Manual handles are for low-frequency manual switching; pneumatic actuators with positioners realize fast flow regulation in industrial process pipelines; electric actuators support remote signal linkage and unattended intelligent control.
Additional screening factors include anti-corrosion coating, fire-proof certification, bidirectional sealing performance and international standards compliance (ANSI, DIN, GB). Comprehensive parameter matching avoids over-specification waste or under-specification hidden pipeline risks.
